Today, Rosie the Riveter is a familiar icon of female empowerment. Yet, the lives and experiences of the 3 million women who inspired the figure, are far less well known. Many such women worked at the Engineering and Research Corporation’s (ERCO) factory in Riverdale, Maryland.
